Before seriously looking for homes, you will want to know how much mortgage you can afford and qualify for. In many ways, this pre-approval is for your benefit. It helps you know what price range you should be looking for.
Beyond just making sure you are looking at homes you can afford, a pre-approval makes it easier for you to make competitive offers. If you find a home you love and want to make and offer, a seller will want to see your pre-approval to know that you can afford to buy their home. If you are in an area where homes are receiving multiple competing offers, you will want to be able to demonstrate that you have already visited with a lender and can qualify for a loan. That will give a seller more confidence in accepting your offer.
